Summary

Decide whether to hire a senior designer or use a contractor. The real trade-off is continuity versus flexibility under an unclear product bet.

The Three Tensions

Control: A hire builds embedded context; a contractor is easier to stop. Unclear if direction is stable enough for a permanent seat.
Capacity now: Design capacity is needed now. Neither option helps if the brief stays fuzzy.
Cost lock-in: Hire = payroll risk after a bad fit. Contractor = day-rate burn without ownership. Neither fixes weak demand on its own.
